If you’re spending time in Old Homosassa, this is the one place we’ll tell you not to skip. Ellie Schiller State Park, officially known as Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, is a must-visit gem on Florida’s Nature Coast. It’s part wildlife sanctuary, part scenic boardwalk trail, and 100% unforgettable.

At this iconic Crystal River area park, you’ll meet rescued manatees, wave to Lu the hippo (a legit movie star), and stroll through shady paths surrounded by native Florida beauty. We visit often ourselves — and we can honestly say it’s one of the most peaceful places anywhere along the Gulf Coast.

Experience Florida Wildlife Like Nowhere Else

This is the kind of place that feels more like a refuge than a zoo. You’ll find native wildlife that call Florida home — from black bears and panthers to river otters and bald eagles. Every animal here has a story; most are permanent residents due to injury or rehabilitation needs.

The park’s most famous resident? That would be Lu — a 60+ year old hippopotamus who’s earned honorary Florida citizenship. Add in an underwater observatory for watching manatees glide by, and you’ve got an experience you can’t get anywhere else on the Gulf Coast.

Take a Stroll Through Old Florida

We love walking the elevated boardwalks through lush forest and spring-fed waters. Spanish moss sways from ancient oaks and palms, and the soundtrack is pure nature: chirping birds, rustling palms, and the occasional splash from an alligator or fish below.

The floating observatory is a guest favorite and a great way to view manatees in their natural spring run habitat. The park has everything you need for a laid-back day. Grab lunch at the on-site café, browse the gift shop for some Old Florida charm, or just take a breather on one of the many benches along the trails. It’s clean, calm, and perfect for a reset. Whether you’re planning a family outing or a quiet nature walk, Ellie Schiller State Park is a great way to unplug and explore the wild heart of Florida’s Nature Coast.

We recommend going early, not just for cooler temperatures but also because the animals tend to be most active in the morning. While pets aren’t allowed inside (service animals only), this is a spot every human in the group will enjoy. Pack sunscreen, stay hydrated, and bring your camera. This park is an excellent reminder of why so many visitors fall in love with the Old Homosassa area.

This park is more than a guest recommendation — it’s one of our personal go-to spots. As locals and owners of Gulf Coast Getaways, we visit often and always leave feeling recharged. Between the manatees, the quiet paths, and the incredible wildlife encounters, it’s one of the top places to explore on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
